Engine Cars

1. Locate the exterior light switch. The dial can be found to the left of the steering wheel and below the instrument panel.
2. Pull the dial toward you one notch to turn on the fog lights. Pull the dial out two notches to also turn on the rear fog lights. Turn the dial clockwise two notches to turn on the headlights while the fog lights are illuminated.
3. Turn off the fog lights by pressing the dial back into its base position.

1. Turn the ignition key to position 1 or 2.
2. Hold down the HR/DAT button on the dashboard for 5 seconds.
3. Press the h/DAT button to scroll through the hours of the day.
4. Press the m/DAT button to scroll through the minutes.
5. Press °C/°F to switch between a 12- and 24-hour clock.
6. Press Set to confirm.

Programming the First Key
1. Insert your electronic key into the ignition and turn it to the On position. Allow the key to remain there for 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
2. Turn the key to the Off position within 45 seconds and then return it to the On position, allowing it to remain for another 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
3. Repeat step two, leaving the key in the ignition for 10 minutes and 30 seconds for a third time.
4. Cycle the key to the Off position and then back to the On position to end the programming sequence.
Programming Additional Keys
5. Insert your first key into the ignition and turn it to the On position.
6. Leave the working key in the ignition for five seconds and return it to the Off position and remove it from the ignition.
7. Insert the additional key into the ignition and turn it to the On position for five seconds as well.
8. Turn this key to the Off position and back to the On position to complete the programming sequence for your additional key.

1. Unlock all the BMWs doors.
2. Press the right edge (the rear or trailing edge) of the fuel filler flap to open it.
3. Turn the fuel cap counterclockwise to remove it, then place it in its holder on the inside of the fuel filler flap.

1. Locate the speaker grilles for the rear speakers on the rear side panels of the interior. The round speaker grille is mounted into a larger trapezoid-shaped piece of plastic. Pry this panel out with your panel tool to expose the speaker.
2. Unscrew the four screws holding the speaker into place. Grasp the speaker by the edge and pull it out.
3. Disconnect the wiring connected to the speaker. Connect the wiring to the new speaker and mount the speaker into the opening with the screws. Snap the panel back in place over the speaker.

1. Open your trunk. Locate the trunk lamp lens located behind your right taillight. Push the plastic tab on the backside of the trunk lamp lens toward the lamp lens to pop out the bulb socket housing.
2. Pull out the plastic wire harness located on the back of the bulb socket housing to disconnect the electrical wires.
3. Remove the button fastener located below the bulb socket assembly on the trunk lining of your BMW trunk with your slotted screwdriver to loosen the carpet lining.
4. Pull the carpet lining back to expose the three 10-mm nuts that hold the taillight lens in place. Remove the nuts with your 10-mm socket wrench, and place the nuts aside for re-installation.
5. Pull the old lens from the outside of the trunk by hand to remove it from the car.
6. Push the new taillight lens into place from the outside of your trunk. Bolt the three 10-mm nuts set aside in Step 4 back into the taillight fixture with your 10-mm socket wrench to hold your lens in place.
7. Press the carpet back into place so that it covers the exposed nuts and fixture. Screw the button fastener into the carpet lining using your slotted screwdriver.
8. Push the plastic wire harness back into the bulb socket to reconnect the electrical wiring. Push the bulb socket housing back into place behind the trunk lamp lens so that it clips in.

1. Raise the hood and locate the oil filter housing. Remove the retaining bolt from the top of the housing with a 13mm socket wrench. Pull the cap up and off the housing. Remove the oil filter from the housing; it will still contain oil so have a container close-by to place it into.
2. Install the larger rubber O-Ring supplied with the new filter under the oil filter housing cap. Then install the small aluminum washer under the oil filter housing bolt.
3. Insert the new oil filter into the filter housing. Replace the oil filter housing cap and tighten the bolt.

1. Press TEL on your Mercedes-Benz radio.
2. Open the Phone menu and select Phone List.
3. Choose External Authorization from the Options menu.
4. Enable your phones Bluetooth connection.
5. Set your phone to discover nearby Bluetooth devices.
6. Select your cars Bluetooth module from the list of devices.
7. Select Yes when your car asks if you would like to authorize the connection to your phone.
8. Enter a security passcode into your Mercedes-Benz. Your passcode can be any combination of digits up to 16 characters in length.
9. Enter the same passcode into your phone.

1. Obtain as much racing experience as possible. For example, learn as much as you can about go-carts, including about racing materials and equipment. Research racing forums online to cull as much information as possible (see Resources).
2. Contact your local racetrack to see if you can intern or be a mechanics assistant for BMW or other racecars. Even if you dont start working on BMW racecars initially, youll gain valuable experience from working in the motorsports industry that will ultimately help you reach your goal.
3. Seek an education in automotive mechanics. There are many associates degrees that offer such a degree; also look for community colleges that offer either motorsports degrees or courses. You can also attend schools that specialize in BMWs: Universal Technical Institute, for example, has a BMW fast-track program (see Resources).
4. Consider training specifically at a BMW school for mechanics. There are a few BMW training centers that hold residence programs for training to be a BMW mechanic. The course varies from eight weeks to close to two years. You may be required to work at a BMW facility in the area for approximately one year.
5. Visit the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) to see what careers are available for BMW racecar mechanics (see Resources). The MIA is a network connecting people who are in the motorsports industry. When you visit the website, click on the career link that offers various positions for BMW mechanics.

1. Pull the hood release located in front of the emergency break near the drivers side door. Pull the lever toward you. You will hear the hood unlock when the hood is released.
2. Walk to the front of hood and look for a tab sticking out from the grill. It is about 2 inches long and gray in color.
3. Pull the hood release pull tab and hold it while lifting up on the hood.

1. Put your key in the ignition and start the engine. Shut off all accessories in your car.
2. Exit the car and place wheel chocks under the front and back tires of your car. Enter the car and apply the emergency brake firmly. Put the transmission in neutral and gradually bring the engine to a warm idle speed of 925 rpm.
3. Exit the car and open the hood to your engine. Allow the engine speed to decrease. Find the engine control module on the right side of the engine and engage the warm idle speed control to keep the engine warm. The engine control module will look like a large computer chip.
4. Attach a timing light to the battery by placing the red clips on the positive terminal before you place the black clips on the negative terminal. Attach the timing light clamps to the spark plug wire labeled Number One.
5. Shine the timing light on the pulley connected to the engines crankshaft. Compare the timing index to the timing marks on the distributor housing. The distributor housing is connected to the engines camshaft and oil pump. The distributor housing will have a cap in the middle of it and metal on the outside of it. The metal will have a dent or marks on it; those marks are the timing marks.
6. Ground the carburetor switch with jumper cables by placing the red clamps on the switch and the black clamps on a metal ground.
7. Rotate the metal part of the distributor housing with your hand until the timing marks line up with the timing index on the pulley. This will set the ignition time to the factory recommended ignition time of your Audi.
8. Remove the timing light from the battery and spark plug wire. Remove the jumper cables from the carburetor switch. Shut off the warm idle speed control and close the hood to your engine.
9. Enter the car and put the transmission in park. Exit the car and remove the wheel chocks.

1. Open the glove box of the BMW 745i and locate the USB port. Its located on the left-hand side of the glove box.
2. Plug the iPhones USB cord into your iPhone. Plug the other end of the USB cord into the USB port inside the glove box.
3. Turn on the iPhone and iDrive display screen. This is the also the display screen you use to navigate and make phone calls. Your iPhones playlists will display on the iDrive display screen.
4. Turn the iDrive controller left or right to navigate through the iPhones playlists and songs. The iDrive controller is located near the cars stick shift.
5. Locate the control buttons on the left hand side of the steering wheel. Press the + to turn the volume up. Press the - button to turn the volume down.

1. Park your car so that the gas tank is adjacent to the pump.
2. Turn off your vehicle, as pumping gas while the engine is running can be hazardous.
3. Open your gas tank and unscrew the gas cap so that you can insert the fuel pump.
4. Select your method of payment on the pump. If using a credit card, swipe it and follow the on-screen instructions. If youre using cash, go inside and pay the attendant before pumping your gas.
5. Select regular unleaded gasoline by removing the pump in the corresponding holster.
6. Place the nozzle into your gas tank. Press Start or pull the lever to begin pumping gas.
7. Pull up on the nozzles lever to pump gas into your Mercedes. Read the meter on the pump as the gas flows into your tank so that you stop at your desired amount of money or gas.
8. Remove the nozzle from you car and place it back in its gas pump holster. Screw the gas cap back into your vehicle and close the tank.

1. Locate the cabin air filter access cover. Typically it is found under the hood at the very back of the engine compartment, or under the dash on the passenger side.
2. Using your screwdriver, unscrew the cover and remove the old cabin air filter.
3. Compare the new cabin air filter to the old one to make sure it is the proper size.
4. Set the old cabin air filter aside.
5. Using your rag, wipe out the cabin air filter compartment to remove remaining dirt and dust.
6. Place the new cabin air filter in the compartment, pressing down and side to side to ensure proper fit. Some filters have a foam gasket on the underside; make sure the filter is installed correctly.
7. Replace the cabin air filter access cover.
8. Wipe yourself and the area clean with rags.

1. Open the trunk of your BMW. If you pop the hood, youre looking in the wrong place. The battery is located in the trunk, on the passenger side. Open the trim panel and pull down. This will give you access to the battery compartment.
2. Remove the red plastic cover from your batterys positive terminal.
3. Clean the terminals and posts of your battery using a post and terminal cleaning tool. If the terminals are corroded or dirty, it will contribute to the draining of your battery. Also, dirty terminals will make charging more difficult.
4. Ensure that your battery charger is turned off and unplugged. If your charger has settings for batteries of various voltage, make sure it is set to 12 volts. Also, some chargers give you the option of setting the amperage at which it charges. The higher amps, the less time it should take to charge your battery.
5. Hook the positive clamp of your charger to the positive terminal of your BMWs battery.
6. Hook the negative clamp of your battery charger to the batterys negative terminal.
7. Plug your battery charger into an outlet. If the cord wont reach, you may need to use an extension cord.
8. Turn your charger on and wait. Depending on how severely the battery is drained and the amps at which youre charging, it could take anywhere from one-half hour to several hours for the battery to completely charge. If you have a maintenance-free battery recommended by BMW, you should see indicators on the top of the battery. When you see the indicator turn green, the battery is completely charged. If the indicator is black, it requires more charging.
9. Unplug the charger when the battery is finished charging and unhook the clamps. Replace the guards and trim panel, then start your BMW.

1. Replace your smart key by contacting your vehicle dealership. Smart keys are used by many auto makers and you must call your specific auto maker to obtain a new smart key.
2. Contact a local towing company to tow your vehicle to the car dealership. Since smart keys must be programmed to match your cars computer chips, you must tow your vehicle to the dealership.
3. Provide the car dealership your vehicle identification number (VIN), which is found on all of your purchase paperwork, insurance paperwork and title and registration. It is also found on your engine, in the driver door panel and inside the bottom-left side of your windshield.
4. Pay for your new smart key once the dealer has finished programming and creating your new smart key. The cost for replacement smart keys vary based on the make of your vehicle, but the average cost is around $200.

1. Make sure you have the proper water pump for your car. The best way to ensure this is by using the chassis number of the car when you buy the water pump from the parts distributor. A water pump for a C280 usually runs around $250. Before trying to loosen the water pump bolts, it is also a good idea to spray some type of lubricant on the bolts to make them easier to remove.
2. Jack the car up and place it securely on jack stands. Drain the radiator with the drain valve at the bottom of the radiator.
3. Open the hood and remove the fan shroud, fan belt, power steering pump and hoses that block the water pump bolts. Leave the power steering pump attached to the hoses and push it out of the way.
4. Remove the pulley on the power steering pump. Use a strap wrench to hold the pulley while you unbolt the pulley bolt with a socket and wrench. Remove the pulley on the water pump with the same method.
5. Undo the rigid pipe in the side of the water pump that goes to the front of the engine. Undo this at the front of the motor and leave on the pump, or remove at both ends and set aside.
6. Remove the plastic leak tube, if one is present, on the bottom of the pump.
7. Remove the four 6-mm Allen head bolts that hold the water pump on. To get to the front ones, use a ball-head attachment for the Allen wrench that allows the end to pivot around. Be very careful not to strip the bolts when removing them.
8. Install a new pump with a new O-ring. Reinstall everything in the reverse order of removal.
9. Place the car on level ground and fill the radiator with the motor running.

1. Turn the ignition key to position 1 or 2.

1. Open the trunk. Take out the floor of the trunk and the intermediate shelf using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Unplug the wiring to the fuel gauge using your hands.
2. Remove the hose clamps securing the fuel lines to the gas tank using the flathead screwdriver. Pull the fuel lines off of the tanks by hand.
3. Place the head of the jack under the tank. Unbolt the fuel tank from the underside of the Mercedes chassis using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Carefully lower the tank down from the chassis with the jack, then pull the tank out from under the car.

1. Unscrew the three bolts holding your BMWs gas tank in place. The bolts are located on both sides and at the front of the gas tank. Use an Allen key wrench to remove the bolts.
2. Prop the gas tank up to give you access to the battery compartment or have an assistant hold the gas tank as you work with the battery.
3. Pull the battery from the compartment underneath the gas tank to access the batterys terminal access points. The terminals point towards the ground.
4. Remove the wires connected to the terminal access points by hand, starting with the negative (black) terminal wire.
5. Attach the wires to the terminal access points of the new battery by hand, starting with the positive (red) terminal wire.
6. Install the new battery into the battery compartment with the terminals facing towards the ground.
7. Reattach your BMWs gas tank by first installing the front screw and then the side screws.
